The Pennacchio Laboratory is jointly located at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley and the Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, CA.

Our laboratory's research is focused on utilizing DNA sequence information and mouse models to decipher genomic information and to understand biology relevant to human disease.  One large program is centered around the use of comparative genomics to prioritize DNA sequences for functional studies in mice. Through these efforts hundreds of novel enhancers have been identified in the human genome and assayed for their spatial patterns of gene activation. More details can be found here and at http://enhancer.lbl.gov. A second area of investigation is the use of high throughput DNA resequencing to identify mutations in candidate genes involved in a variety of common human diseases as well as in other non-vertebrate organisms being sequenced by the Joint Genome Institute.  A major recent focus has been in assessing next generation sequencing technologies for their application to address outstanding issues in biology throughout the tree of life.
